Is it safe for me to get a COVID-19 vaccine if I am pregnant?

A pregnant person who is part of a group who is eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine (e.g., healthcare personnel) may choose to be vaccinated. There is currently limited data on the safety of COVID-19 vaccines in pregnant or lactating people. Consider these when making a decision:

  • level of COVID-19 community transmission
  • patient’s risk of contracting COVID-19
  • risks of COVID-19 to the patient and potential risks to the fetus
  • efficacy of the vaccine
  • side effects of the vaccine
  • lack of data about the vaccine during pregnancy

Where to report adverse events that occur after the COVID-19 vaccination?

You can report adverse events following COVID-19 vaccination to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS). Vaccination providers are required by the FDA to report:

  • vaccination administration errors
  • serious adverse events
  • cases of multisystem inflammatory syndrome
  • cases of COVID-19 that result in hospitalization or death following COVID-19 vaccination under a EUA.
